Don’t ask us why, but driftingsliding or controlled skidding… call it what you wantit’s fun! Unfortunately, to practice the exercise, all the cars are not placed in the same boat. For vehicles with a powerplant architecture, this is generally not too difficult. For the rear axle to lose grip and begin to slide, you only need to apply a little power at the right time. After that, it remains only to master the drift, but that’s another story. For other architectures it is more difficult…

Architectures are more favorable than others

There is also an opportunity to “drift” on a four-wheel drive car. Ask Ken Block. He is the king of this discipline and he loves it! On the other hand, it is still much more difficult than with an engine. And it is not for nothing that if a rear-engined car transfers all its power to the last, all-wheel drive distributes it between two axles or even 4 wheels! So we have rear axle clutch, the number one enemy of sliding! And with draft it is almost impossible… Unless…

Traction drift, there is a solution…

There are two solutions to make some drifts in traction. The first one is a bit trickier and requires you to play with the mass transfer, letting off the accelerator mid-turn to unload the rear axle, causing it to lose traction and thus causing it to slide. The second solution is much simpler: install the wheels on a surface or object that does not adhere to the asphalt at all. Exactly what the driver of this Golf GTI did with these wheelie bins! But he forgot a small detail. He did not lock the wheels with the handbrake! As a result, pieces of wood, visibly attached to the wheels, returned with them and well injured rear bumper and wings…
