After a presentation this summer, the BMW iX1which is the 100% electric version of the third generation BMW X1, has just started production at the BMW plant in Regensburg (called Regensburg in German), in Germany.

All German factories of the Bavarian brand are now capable of producing electric cars: “By 2024, at least every third BMW that leaves our Bavarian factories will be an electric car”said Milan Nedelkovich, head of production and member of the BMW board of directors.

BMW iX1: ultra-modern plant

The BMW Group has invested more than 1.6 billion euros in the production of electrical components at the German plants in Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg, where more than 3,300 employees work in the production of electrical components. The Regensburg plant is a pilot unit that has been digitally mapped to ensure accurate and efficient capacity planning and planning for future plant structures.

To prevent technical malfunctions, for example, in transport systems, a predictive maintenance system has also been developed: production errors are detected in time, which makes it possible to avoid stopping the production system. Plants and machines are then monitored using automated evaluation of process data.

BMW iX1: the use of artificial intelligence

The painting shop of the plant relies on vArtificial Intelligence : surfaces to be painted are digitized and processed using a fully automated program to guarantee flawless quality.

Artificial intelligence is also used during vehicle assembly, as well as during final quality checks with a computer system called AIQX (Artificial Intelligence Quality Next) that works alongside conventional camera-based quality checks.

BMW iX1: optimized logistics

BMW’s Regensburg plant was also designed to avoid overconsumption and save resources, particularly in terms of logistics. Example, BMW iX1 high-voltage batteries are produced in the countryto limit delivery times as well as the environmental impact of related logistics.

Till the end of the year more than 400 employees will work on the production of electrical components at the factory in Regensburg, which occupies 45,000 square meters.
