In recent years, Renault has been riding the wave of the camper van boom with the launch of ‘SpaceNomad’ versions of the new Renault Trafic and Kangoo. But in the 1990s, the French brand already attracted the interest of fans recreational vehicles…
Indeed, across the English Channel, French creations at that time were highly appreciated as a basis for conversion into mini-camping: this is how the transformed Citroën C15, Peugeot Partner and Renault Express appeared. But the smallest Renault Clio of the first generation was also right with this Sports kit from Barry Stimsona designer specializing in this type of eccentricity.
Renault Clio Sportique: an unusual motorhome
On the basis of the ordinary Renault Clio of the first generation, Stimson grafted a rather substantial motorhome onto it: this one has a rather peculiar, if not ugly, look that completely transforms the small French city car.
We find there a retractable roof on jacks that hide bedding for two, and a seat that can be converted into a double bed by folding down the car’s back seat and adding cushions. For the time, the modularity was very reasonable, even if we can see that the implementation was much simpler than on the latest equipped vans today.
Things I Never Knew About #9854: Stimson Sportique Camper based on a Renault Clio.
The first image popped up on FB and sent me down a rabbit hole. The others belong to the same so I assume this is the only one in the UK.
Can’t decide if this is cool or shit. pic.twitter.com/JEQLTJyntz

Renault Clio Sportique: complete equipment
There are also blackout curtains at the back, a skylight, a removable separate table for indoor dining, and a folding table and chairs for outdoor camping: enough to go on a weekend adventure with his little family!
On the sides, integrated units hide storage space and carry a gas heater, as well as a sink. This one has a faucet that can be converted into a detachable hand shower that can be used both indoors and outdoors. The bench is lifting and allows you to hide the water tank.
Renault Clio Sportique: ready for adventure
The large two-piece glazed tailgate can be transformed into an awning to increase interior space when parked and protect from the elements. As an option, you can also place a refrigerator on board.
Little known in our region, this Renault Clio fitted with this Sporting kit signed by Barry Stimson was mostly sold in the UK in the 1990s. There are a few examples in circulation now, not necessarily in good condition as you can see from the images above!
