The European car market started 2022 in a particularly tense context. The shortage of semiconductors, the war in Ukraine, the sharp increase in the price of raw materials and the explosion of fuel prices, bad news followed for the builders. This tense situation led to a drop in sales in almost all market segments. Although sales of electrified vehicles have picked up, the numbers are down. Here are the ratings of different segments, best selling models since the beginning of the year.
The European market is dominated by SUVs
Oddly enough, since the beginning of the year the SUV market is a locomotive on total car sales in Europe. Thus we find C-segment SUV (length from 4.1 to 4.5 meters) leads in sales 22.8% of registrations. This market is clearly dominated by the Hyundai Tucson. Next comes the B-SUV market, which is characterized by small urban SUVs, with 18.8% of registrations. Finally, the podium is completed by the city car market, which represents 17.3% of registrations in Europe.
Another finding is the significant growth of family SUVs (segment D), which increased by 20% compared to 2021. It should be noted that this is the only segment that shows growth in the first half of the year. Discover segment by segment of Europe’s bestsellers.
