Today, small cars have fewer and fewer sides. And, to be honest, several years have passed. Indeed, for quite a long time, manufacturers have been leaving the segment of mini city cars, which is considered too unprofitable. Environmental standards and safety standards, which require the addition of many expensive technologies, are in question. Thus, the price of these cars must be increased, risking losing customers. And the brands can’t cut the already very low margins for these cars. This is one of the reasons why most of them choose to leave it segmentwhich is not very interesting from a financial point of view.

Audi still believes in it
This also applies to Audi. Since 2010, the German firm has been selling its A1, updated in 2018. If this allowed the manufacturer to attract many customers, then in some markets it had mixed success. That’s largely why the brand decided not to offer him a direct replacement, while the current generation will soon end its career. It should still undergo a small restyling and remain in the catalog for at least two years. Nevertheless, Audi has no plans to leave city car segment, as a representative of the brand told our Top Gear colleagues. He notes that ” we are very interested in small city cars. We try to think outside the box for this type of model and believe that in the future world of electric cars there will be a great demand for city cars“.

City electric car
More precisely, the German company would already be working on the development as a whole new city car, this time with an electric motor. Then it has to share underwear with the future creation of Volkswagen and Skoda, which also want to enter this segment. However, the engines should be slightly different. Oliver Hoffmann, Audi’s director of research and development, also noted that most of the brand’s models will be electric from 2027.
