The Mercedes Drive Pilot system is a Level 3 conditional automated drivingwhich emphasizes safety and reliability: in fact, it is based on an architecture that allows you to keep under control all situations that may arise on the road.
The German manufacturer actually wanted to preserve the physical and functional redundancy of braking, steering, power and some sensors, guaranteeing the safety of passengers at all times. System Mercedes Drive Pilot already on sale in Germany from May 2022 as an option for the S-Class and EQS, and should soon land in France after obtaining the necessary permits.
Mercedes Drive Pilot: reliable and safe autonomous driving
In general, more than 30 sensors allows the Drive Pilot system to handle driving tasks as a real driver would: it includes radars, cameras and LiDAR that allow it to recognize and process the environment and events on the road.
“The name Mercedes-Benz has always been synonymous with safety. And we are already setting standards in the development and implementation of autonomous driving systems such as DRIVE PILOT. We are convinced that redundancy is the right approach for Level 3 automated driving and even beyond… Relying on just one type of sensor does not meet Mercedes-Benz’s high safety standards.” said Markus Schaefer, Head of Technology and Head of Development and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Group.
Mercedes-Benz is the first to receive Level 3 certification for autonomous driving from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority.

Mercedes Drive Pilot: How does it work?
When the driver activates Drive Pilot, the system takes over the wheel, controlling speed and distance while keeping the vehicle in its lane. If the conditions are met, it is also possible to delegate driving in traffic jamsup to 60 km/h.
In the event of a malfunction, the Drive Pilot system is able to return control of the car to the driver in complete safety. At this point, if the driver does not react, for example because he is not feeling well, the car is able to perform an emergency stop maneuver: it is thendrive safely to a stop without posing a danger to other road users.
Mercedes has always relied on technology
always, Mercedes is betting on technology and is a benchmark in terms of safety and innovation. The German manufacturer has long been releasing Level 2 driver assistance systems on the market, which make life easier for motorists by controlling speed and distance, direction and lane changes.
At the end of 2021, Mercedes became the first car manufacturer in the world to receive international approval for a system for conditional autonomous driving level 3. The Stuttgart firm is already preparing a continuation of the system. Smart Park Pilotwhich allows for the automation of driverless parking assistance, which will lead to 4th level of autonomous driving.
