Radar cars: do our European neighbors have them? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

Cars with radar, which are increasingly appearing on our roads, are not French exclusive. These vehicles also circulate in other European countries. But in a different way, because France is it the only country that privatized control of radar cars.

Radar cars, but without identification marks

France is not the first country in Europe to have bet on radar cars. Other countries have been using this tool for several years. This is, for example, the case of Germany, where some police cars are equipped with an infrared laser which controls the speed of motorists. The fined driver later receives a letter with his fine.
The same is true in Great Britain where the police use a laser gun, which manually check the speed of offending drivers. A common practice across the Channel during a busy weekend on the roads.

Belgium is also long before other European countries tried to adjust the on-board radar. But the excessive number of disputes put an end to the experiment.

Even if the technology of private speed cameras is used elsewhere in Europe, France remains the country that develops the tool the most.

Where in France do radar cars drive?

Till the end of the year 450 private radar cars will drive on the roads of France. Some regions will be more targeted than others.

Distribution of radar cars in France:

  • Normandy : 26 vehicles
  • Brittany : 18 vehicles
  • Pays de la Loire : 19 vehicles
  • Center-Val de Loire : 20 vehicles
  • Ode France – 33 private cars
  • Big East – 40 cars
  • Burgundy-Franche-Comté : 24 cars
  • New Aquitaine : 45 cars

And by the end of 2022, radar cars will still gain popularity!

Here are the regions where they will be deployed in the coming months:

  • Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
  • Ile de France
  • Occitania
  • Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
