Electric cars: their real autonomy on the test News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your inbox

The Swiss mobility reference club Touring Club Suisse (TCS) has joined forces with the Norwegian automobile club NAF to carry out extensive testing of real-world autonomy, consumption and charging times 31 electric car models. These different criteria are necessary to make the car suitable for everyday life as well as for long journeys.

It autonomy test realistically reproduces intercity travel and is a supplement to the WLTP, RDE-TCS and GreenNCAP tests. All 31 tested cars traveled the same route under the same conditions.

Electric cars: models with the greatest real autonomy

According to TCS tests, models that have the greatest autonomy are the following:

  • Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+: range of 620 km
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC: range of 596 km
  • BMW i4 eDrive40: 584 km of autonomy
  • BMW iX xDrive50: range of 569 km
  • Tesla Model Y Long Autonomy Dual Motor: 545 km of autonomy

However, the Swiss organization points to actual values that turned out to be lower than the WLTP certification values. At the other end of the rating is the top five electric cars with the smallest range :

  • Hongqi EHS-9: range of 371 km
  • Cupra Born: 376 km of autonomy
  • Maxus Euniq 6: 388.4 km
  • BMW iX xDrive40: range of 399.4 km
  • Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo: 403 km of autonomy

Electric cars: models that consume the least

Here are five, according to TCS testing electric cars that consume the least :

  • Tesla Model Y dual motor with long range: 13.8 kWh/100 km
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD: 14.7 kWh/100 km
  • BMW i4 eDrive40: 14.8 kWh/100 km
  • Cupra from birth: 14.8 kWh/100 km
  • MG ZS Long Range: 14.9 kWh/100 km

Tesla Model Y and BMW i4 eDrive40 stand out for their long range, energy efficiency and low consumption.

Electric cars: models that charge the fastest

During long journeys, the charging power and speed are important advantages to reduce the downtime required for recharging. TCS analyzed the time it took each model to go from 10% to 80% battery capacity and based on that set the classification of autonomy has been restored per hour, for each model:

  • Kia EV6 RWD: 972 km/h
  • Mercedes-Benz EQB 350 4MATIC: 969 km/h
  • Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo: 930 km/h
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD: 894 km/h
  • Kia EV6 4WD: 880 km/h
