Shortage: manufacturers are increasingly closing factories Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Component shortages continue to hurt automakers. While the sector hoped for a improvement of the situation from this summerthe situation has not changed much. Factories are still closedand the production of some models was seriously delayed.

BMW closes plant in Leipzig

German brand closed for at least two days its factory in Leipzig. The latter, in particular, produces the Series 1, Series 2 Gran Coupé and Series 2 Active Tourer models. Important models for the brand, as well as closures that may extend delivery times. In fact, it is a subcontractor of the brand that tries to deliver the radiators that are equipped with the models mentioned above. These supply difficulties which led to the closure of the factory.

Difficulties that BMW’s competitors were already facing at the beginning of the year. Indeed, Mercedes and Volkswagen also halted some production due to a lack of parts supplied by their subcontractors.

Shortage, Stellantis will suffer greatly this fall

This fall of 2022 Stellantis group suffers the most lack of components. While Stellantis shows very good financial health, vehicle production remains very challenging. At Peugeot, first of all, where site closures have been linked in recent months in the east of France. The latest dates back to last week, when the Sochaux plant (which makes the 3008 and 5008, among others) was shut down for at least four days due to a lack of semiconductors.

The same observation for the Opel factory in Zaragoza, which also closed for several days absence of semiconductors. Last June it was the Fiat plant in Melfi, which also closed its doors due to a persistent shortage of semiconductors.

This morning we finally learned that the Stellantis factory in Sével, northern France, will be closed for at least 1 month. A hit for the group because the plant produces 300,000 commercial vehicles per year. Among the models whose production was affected, such giants of the market as Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxter or Citroën Jumpy.

Therefore, this period remains very difficult for manufacturers, even if some predict the end of the crisis earlier than expected. Meanwhile, semiconductor shortages continue to weigh on the auto industry.
