It was still one of the last manufacturers not to succumb to the charms of SUVs. McLaren has so far explained that it does not want to address this segment. But since June last year rumors are spreading about the possible arrival of an SUV under the British brand. Rumors that the manufacturer did not deny.

McLaren is thinking hard about the future SUV

It was during an interview with our British colleagues at AutoCar that the brand’s new boss, Michael Leiters said he was thinking about the matter. “I designed an SUV at Ferrari, I designed an SUV at Porsche, so I love SUVs. But we won’t do it for me. However, I believe that this is a very important market. This is a very attractive market segment”.

It is indeed Michael Leiters who is behind the Purosangue program at Ferrari. The SUV of this brand should appear by 2023. The British brand, which specializes in large sports cars, is indeed working on the possible arrival of an SUV. A change in position that can be explained the financial difficulties faced by the Woking firm. McLaren hopes to capitalize on the SUV’s success. This strategy was used by Aston Martin with the DBX.

Original design characteristic of the brand

Therefore, if the English brand confirms that it is working on a new SUV, the latter will not be at any price. It should match the brand image. According to Michael Leiters, “What we need to understand as McLaren is how do we find a product that fits our DNA? We’re not going to make a classic SUV.”

A design you may have seen before. In 2021, during the Extreme E championship, McLaren already showed an off-road model that works on electricity. If this is clearly not the brand’s future SUV, the latter should restore some elements of the vehicle used in the Extreme E.

As for the price, the future SUV of the brand should be around 400,000 euros.
