An underground gas storage facility in Ukraine was attacked on Sunday during the latest wave of Russian missile strikes on power plants, Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz said, adding that gas supplies to consumers were not disrupted. agencies report.
The country’s energy ministry and distributors said Ukraine increased electricity imports and halted exports on Sunday after a recent series of Russian attacks in which major power producer DTEK lost 50 percent of its capacity.
On Friday, Russia attacked power generation and transmission facilities in Ukraine, causing significant disruptions in many regions, and on Sunday morning, power facilities in three Ukrainian regions were also attacked.
Oleksiy Chernyshov, the head of the board of Naftogaz, said that the equipment was damaged during the attack and repairs are underway.
“The situation will not have a critical impact on the operation of PSG, as the gases are stored deep underground. Damaged ground infrastructure will require repairs, but we have enough back-up capacity to mitigate any immediate impact,” Chernyshov wrote on Facebook.
Earlier on Sunday, Chernyshov said that the company is keeping up with all customer requests.
The message of the Ministry of Energy states: “For the current day, the import of electricity is forecast at the level of 14,900 megawatt-hours (MWh). Export is not expected.”
The day before the attack on March 22, Ukraine imported 3,300 MWh and exported 2,148 MWh.
The losses (from Friday’s attack) have already been calculated, and the DTEK group has lost 50% of its generating capacity, we can officially announce this information,” Serhii Kovalenko, head of the Yasno distribution company, said on national television. He did not provide further details.
DTEK is the largest private generating company in Ukraine.
“Enough backups”
Kovalenko noted that Russia attacked two links of the energy system – generation and distribution, hitting both TPPs and HPPs.
“The enemy hit the network nodes and transformers hard,” he said.
The ministry said that on Sunday, Russia attempted to strike a critical energy infrastructure facility in the Lviv region in western Ukraine.
“The equipment caught fire and the installation was de-energized. There were no casualties. The consequences are being established,” the agency reported.
According to him, power lines were damaged in Kyiv region, 1,400 households in two settlements were cut off.
Chernov noted that Naftogaz is currently working on localization and liquidation of the consequences of Russian attacks.
“There are no critical consequences for the operation of the storage facilities, as the gas is at a considerable depth. The damaged part of the ground infrastructure will have to be restored, but we have enough reserve capacity,” he said.
The majority of Ukrainian gas storage facilities are located in the western part of the country and are capable of storing approximately 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
