A direct rail link between Brasov Railway Station and Gimbav International Airport has been under discussion for several years and small administrative steps are being taken. If all goes well, trains will start running in the summer of 2026, and the project will cost around 150 million euros.
Gimbav International Airport opened in June 2023 and currently only one company operates regular flights: Wizz Air, while Dan Air moved its flights to Bacau earlier this year. Brasov representatives are discussing this with several airlines, but it remains to be seen what will come to fruition. For the summer of 2024, several weekly charter flights to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean region are planned.
From Brasov train station to the international airport is 10 km by road, and the journey by car takes less than 20 minutes if there are no traffic jams. There is also a direct bus that departs once an hour.
A direct rail connection would require a new line from Gimbav, a town located on Highway 200 Brasov – Fegaras – Sibiu – Vincu de Jos – Deva – Arad – Curtici. From Brasov railway station to Gimbav is 8.9 km, trains can reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h, but there are many slow sections and the trains leave in 14 minutes. The line is not electrified.
The publication Bună Ziua Brașov writes that the request for financing the Brasov – Airport railway is being prepared together with the Ministry of Transport and JASPERS experts.
Brasov-Gimbav International Airport can be connected to the national railway network by the summer of 2026. The railway connection will be implemented with grant funding through the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR), and in order to prepare the documentation for receiving European funds, CFR Brasov Regional Office and Brasov County Council will use consultations. from European experts JASPERS (which provides technical assistance for obtaining non-refundable funds), writes the local publication.
The project envisages the creation of an option to connect Brasov Airport to the existing railway network in the area with a double electrified line, centralized at the Gimbav station, with a direct connection from highway 200 in the direction of Codlea (Sibiu), with a double-line station located in the immediate vicinity of the Brasov International Airport terminal Gimbav, and a line for the cargo area. The estimated cost of the investment is EUR 148.62 million.
In order to determine the steps to be taken in order to receive the funding, two meetings were held in Bucharest on Friday 15 March, attended by representatives of the Ministry of Transport and JASPERS experts, together with the President of the Brasov District Council, Şerban Todorica, the State Administrator of the District, Daniel Gligorash and director of the Brasov CFR regional office, Ioan Pintja.
