844 researchers, students and teachers of the university had the right to vote, and the turnout (about 90%) was higher than 8 years ago, in 2016, when Tudorel Toader received his first mandate, Ziarul de Iasi reported.

After the vote, Prof. Dr. Liviu Maha emerged as the favorite with 222 votes, while the former Minister of Justice only got 191 votes.

“We are staying at the same pace to communicate with colleagues, to answer questions, to gain trust,” declared Professor Dr. Liviu Maha immediately after finding out how many votes he had received.

The other 4 candidates received the following votes:

  • Professor Michaela Onofrei (128);
  • Professor Gabriel Claudio Mursa (121);
  • Professor Tudor Lukian (44 votes);
  • Associate Professor Adrian Muraru (15);

The second round will take place a week after the first round of voting, on March 18, and the two candidates will have another week to organize faculty meetings or public debates to present their management plans.

The university elections, through which academic communities choose their leadership, which in some universities started already at the end of 2023, did not bring changes when we talk about the positions of rectors, the most important position in any university. In the case of four universities (from Alba Iulia, Timisoara, Brasov and Tirgu Mures), the current rectors were elected for a fourth term.
