Federal prosecutors charged Corbin Schultz with conspiracy to disclose information about national defense, export defense equipment and technical data, and bribery of a government official, the US Department of Justice said in a press release.

According to the statement, Schultz, who was arrested at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, was paid about $42,000 to provide information to a person he believed lived in Hong Kong about U.S. plans if Taiwan came under military attack.

Schultz put “personal gain ahead of the safety of the American people,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen said in a statement.

“Today’s arrest shows that such betrayal does not pay — the Department of Justice is committed to identifying and prosecuting those who violate their oath to protect our nation’s secrets.”
