On Thursday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on the release of part of the conscripts into the reserve for conscript military service in the spring of 2024, reports Independent Kyiv.
The decree applies to those conscripts whose term of military service ended during martial law and was extended beyond the normal term.
Basic military service in Ukraine is mandatory for men aged 18 to 27 and usually lasts at least one year. Young conscripts did not participate in hostilities during the large-scale invasion of Russia.
Martial law was imposed in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Since then, the event has been repeatedly extended.
The changes in Ukrainian legislation took place against the background of Ukraine’s efforts to increase mobilization in 2024 and to solve the problem of front-line rotation, as part of the soldiers have been at the front without a break since the start of the general war in 2022.
The new decree applies to servicemen of the Armed Forces, the Special State Transport Service and other military formations.
Their transfer to the reserve will take place in April-May 2024.
- “Today there is a decree on the release into reserve of conscripts – those who were called up for military service even before the beginning of the large-scale invasion. Now, at the request of the military command, several weeks are needed for preparatory procedures – replacement of people from the point of view of performing defense tasks, and from April conscripts will be sent to the reserve. I know that some of them have signed up to serve in the Armed Forces. I am grateful to everyone,” Zelenskyi said, Ukrinform reports.
On February 26, Zelensky signed the law on the conditions of demobilization of conscripts.
