European Battery Alliance: what is it? Auto Plus news in your smartphone

In the world of electric cars, China is generally a monopoly in the production and supply of batteries. A hegemony that Europe hopes to undermine, and the Old Continent intends to attack the very heart of the battery industry attacking China’s special relationship with mining and commodity companies.

Europe has set itself the goal of finding a place under the sun to reduce its dependence on the Middle Kingdom and take advantage of the opportunities associated with the ecological transition. One of the initiatives introduced by the European Union is called the “European Battery Alliance”. But what exactly is his role?

A market that could be worth up to 250 billion euros

Contrary to what one would believe, the European Battery Alliance is not very young anymore, as it was born at the end of 2017 from the will of Maros Šefković, the vice-president of the European Commission, who considered himself important for the launch of European projects. around batteries, especially in relation to electric vehicles. currently more than 120 actors are members of this association.
But what are these organisms? For the most part, these are research institutes, private companies, state bodies and governments that work harmoniously and actively cooperate with EU member states and the European Investment Bank.
The goal is to attract investments and accelerate the development of the industry. From the moment of its creation, the European Battery Alliance was well aware that Chinese hegemony would be very difficult to circumvent. But by differentiating their goals and working on the supply chain and a truly sustainable production systemEurope can find a dimension that goes beyond its borders and impose itself on a global scale, playing at a different table: a truly ecological aspect of an electric car, moving away from all the environmental problems that concern China, related to batteries, and in particular the processes of extracting raw materials. According to analysts, Europe can achieve turnover of 250 billion euros by 2025 in the battery sector.

This applies to all areas

To build a truly green chain, the European Battery Alliance is working on several fronts, all more or less closely related:

  • Raw materials and semi-finished products
  • Cell components
  • Structure of cells
  • Battery design
  • Production of electric cars
  • Processing

Europe wants to create an advanced, competitive and environmentally friendly sector by fundamentally rethinking certain activities and using new, more efficient technologies. Green above all, because the transition will be truly green when it manages to control and limit CO emissions2 from the stages related to the extraction of raw materials, to the production of battery components, to the full production of batteries.

All this without forgetting, of course, the whole part is related to recycling.
