Owning your own car is a guarantee of independence, and it obviously has many advantages. But this, of course, also has certain limitations.
More and more expensive repairs
Indeed, you should also ensure that your vehicle is well insured, MOT’d and in good working order. Which means going to the garage regularly. However, changes in vehicle repair costs have increased significantly in recent years, according to a study conducted SRA (Automotive Safety and Repair), the professional body to which all insurers belong. The latter then identifies three cost items: spare parts, labor and paint. They all grew, but spare parts grew the most (+7.5% between 2022 and 2023). This increase affected the decrease in the share of other expenditure items, while almost 52% of the tariff was accounted for spare parts, compared to 37.7% for labor. From 2019 to 2023, the cost of spare parts increased by 30%, which affected the total cost of repairs.
More repairable vehicles than before
The complex architecture of vehicles is partly responsible for this a sharp increase in costs, and it is unlikely to get better. Focusing on the 70% of the most used parts, we see that three of them have increased by more than 10% in 2023 compared to 2022. These are front doors, headlights, and fires in general. However, there is more good news. Indeed, between 2019 and 2023, the share of economically non-renewable vehicles (EVVs) decreased. Last year, 89.4% of vehicles could be repaired, compared to 87.5% in 2019. However, insurance benefits will cost insurers and policyholders much more in 2023 than in 2019, with an increase of 26.2% in just 4 years. In fact, this trend has even grown exponentially since 2021 as cars have become more expensive and new, more expensive technologies have become available.
In all cases, you must remain vigilant in the face of these price changes in order to make informed decisions about your vehicle.
