The European Union provided only 77 billion euros out of the 144 billion euros promised to Kyiv, according to the experts of the Institute of World Economy in Kiel, writes The Moscow Times.
The Institute of World Economy in Kiel came to this conclusion after analyzing the promises made to Ukraine by 41 countries, especially EU countries, in the period from January 24, 2022 to January 15, 2024.
“However, the gap between EU commitments and appropriations remains very large. In order to completely replace US military aid in 2024, Europe will need to double its current level and pace of arms aid,” analysts at the Kiel Institute say.
According to a list compiled by a German institute, Romania, which has confirmed its commitment to support Ukraine two years after the war began, ranks 29th with a pledge of 126 million euros in aid.
Romania has never publicly disclosed how much military aid it has sent to Ukraine during the nearly two years of the Russian-initiated war, sparking controversy and speculation.
Romania has sent 15 military aid convoys to Ukraine and will help train Ukrainian F-16 pilots, according to the Center for Strategic Communications, the Kyiv government’s official anti-disinformation organization, which released a video thanking Romania last month.
And RBC drew attention to the fact that two years after the start of the war in Ukraine, experts noticed a gap between the amount of aid promised and actually provided by the West.
The US delivered only about a third of the tanks offered
According to RBC’s calculations, since the beginning of the invasion, the US has delivered only about a third of the proposed tanks and two-thirds of the promised heavy artillery to Ukraine.
Great Britain fulfilled its commitment in full, delivering 14 tanks and 130 guns, while Denmark promised 59 tanks but never delivered any.
In total, during the first year of the war, Western countries sent Ukraine 143 billion euros in military, economic and humanitarian support, of which 73.18 billion euros came from the United States.
The leader in the field of arms is also Washington, which allocated 44.34 billion euros to Ukraine, followed by Great Britain (4.89 billion euros), Poland (2.43 billion euros) and Germany (2.36 billion euros).
Poland sent the most tanks to Ukraine
Poland offered the most tanks to Ukraine – 264 out of 324 promised. In second place was the Czech Republic, which delivered all 90 promised cars. Germany delivered 48 tanks out of 55 declared. Most of the heavy artillery was delivered by the USA – 218 units out of 301 promised.
In mid-February, the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Odile Renaud-Basso, said that the financial support provided to Ukraine after the Russian invasion exceeded the scale of aid that the United States provided to the countries of post-war Europe.
In terms of beneficiaries’ share of GDP, Ukraine’s support is “far greater in real terms than the post-World War II Marshall Plan,” she said.
External support was “gigantic” as it financed 50% of the Ukrainian budget, Renault-Basso added.
