Journalist Emilia Sherkan on Friday accused Adrian Choroyana, the director of the National Library, of violating the GDPR by revealing the contents of a request he made to the institution headed by a former foreign minister to digitize Mircea Joane’s doctoral dissertation.

Emilia Sherkan said in a post on her Facebook page on Friday morning that the information that Adrian Cioroianu made public, first in a comment on the publication of the military analyst Hari Bukur-Marku and then even in the profile of the historian, is of “extreme gravity “.

  • “Adrian Coroianu received this information through the prism of his position as director of the National Library of Romania (BNaR) and made it public.
  • He publicly disclosed information obtained solely in the course of his official duties, and this information was not public and was not intended for public disclosure.”

The journalist clarified what was written in the request she sent to the institution under the leadership of Adrian Choroyanu.

  • “The printed request I sent to BNaR for the digitization of this thesis reads as follows: “The National Library of Romania is a personal data operator registered under no. 1375/15.10.2004. In accordance with Law No. 677/21.11.2001, the National Library of Romania guarantees the confidentiality of personal data provided by users in requests addressed to the institution.”
  • The National Library of Romania’s privacy policy states: “The National Library of Romania (BNaR) is committed to the security of the personal data you provide to us in order to access our services. The security and privacy policy promoted by the National Library of Romania and presented on this website applies to all interactions between BNaR and you.”
  • According to the document, the list of personal data, which includes some or all of the data that the National Library of Romania collects about an individual, includes “the project for which you are requesting documents/bibliography,” Emilia Sercan wrote.

Emilia Serkan emphasized that the information in the application is not public and is protected by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The journalist accuses Choroyana of deliberately making both the subject of the investigation and herself vulnerable, again demanding the reaction of the Minister of Culture Raluka Tsurkan.

“This action cannot remain without social consequences, and I once again ask the Minister of Culture to speak about this situation,” concluded Sherkan.

This information was made public by Choroyanu in a comment to the publication of the military analyst Hari Bukur-Marku about the conflict between them.

“Regarding the woman you mention, it is enough to tell you what she asked at the gym after she asked for Mircea Joane’s job, which she was given, of course, with my consent and in accordance with the law, but I don’t know what she reads, but it is clear that he also discovered in his bag a thermometer brought from home (intentionally? Did he take candidate M. Joan’s temperature?), during which he takes a picture of the victim and explains why there are no students in the library – it is February 27, that is, on the second the day after the student vacation, the time when young people were at the faculties to find out their schedule,” the former foreign minister responded. of Adrian Choroianu.

Adrian Cioroianu, director of the National Library, continued to attack Emilia Sherkan on his Facebook page on Thursday evening, accusing her of lying.“like a Bolshevik newspaper.”

How the conflict between Adrian Choroyanu and Emilia Sherkan began

It will be recalled that after journalist Emilia Sherkan complained that in the premises of the National Library readers were forced to sit in jackets at a temperature of 16.6 degrees, the director of the institution, Adrian Choroianu, attacked her and, in addition, forced her to publish on Facebook what information he requested from libraries

It is 16 degrees in the reading rooms of the National Library

  • “In the free reading area, on the first floor, where students usually study or work on various projects, it was 16.6 degrees. The temperature can be seen on the thermometer, which I brought with me from home specifically to see how many degrees it is in the most important library of this country.
  • The atmosphere was completely deserted, people were dressed more like those walking the streets in Bucharest today, because I didn’t see anyone with a hood on the street. It was 18 degrees outside today,” the journalist wrote on Facebook.

Due to the cold, only one reading room is open, on the first floor.

  • “The activity was moved to the “economy” because this room is located on the west side of the building, where the sun falls and it is warmer than in “literature”, where the temperature does not exceed 13.5 – 14.00 degrees.
  • These are the conditions in the “educated Romania” of the emperor, for which the state pays more than 7 million lei to build him a house with two (two!!!) fitness rooms, because one is not enough, but that the state does not find money to heat the building of the National Library .
  • Such is the respect in “educated Romania” for study, work, study.
  • The workers told me that 80 readers used to visit the reading rooms a day. Many of them were foreign students, used to studying in the library. Today there were about 10 of us. The staff were dressed just like the young people you see in the photos, in thick street clothes. I asked them if they had seen the director of the National Library, Adrian Choroyana, who was passing through the reading rooms to inquire about the situation of the readers and employees of the institution. “Yes, I saw him, but at Digi24, not here,” Serkan said.

Adrian Choroianu accused Emilia Serkan of lying: “You should be ashamed”

In response, the director of the National Library, Adrian Choroianu, accused the journalist of lying:

  • “As many times, you are spreading lies/fake news to both BNaR and me. You should be ashamed, although I won’t bet you have such doubts.
  • You will get a detailed answer another time, because you still have the cowardice to avoid a face-to-face debate with me, as I have long publicly suggested! But you still can’t avoid it indefinitely. And then we will see whose mask will fall (…)
  • You are lying when you associate the temperature in the library with my stay (for the past two years). The building has had problems since its opening in 2012, both in winter (heat, as it is, “rises” to the upper floors, through the central atrium, not by the will of the director, but according to the laws of physics) and in summer (often due to glazed surfaces, the greenhouse effect ). Since its opening, the building has not had its own power plant (depends on hot water via Radet), and the cooling system is long out of date. So, either you haven’t entered the building until 2021 (which has recently brought some strange magnetism), or you’re disillusioned with the current staff or me.
  • You are lying when you allude to all kinds of nonsense about the premises adjacent to the library. For you and all the drunk/fake news people out there: no land around the National Library, no parking, no guardhouses, no guards outside, no poles, etc. They are NOT included in the administration of BNaR, so any comments on these topics are drunkenness, lies or fantasies of some ignorant people.
  • Mrs. Sherkan, I tell you in a friendly way, so that you do not say that someone is threatening you: you will not be able to indefinitely avoid a direct public meeting with me, to which everyone comes with their books on the table, with their present and their past.
  • Until then, you can throw stones as much as you want, but don’t forget that I believe in the boomerang effect of ideas!”
