At least 104 people were killed and 760 wounded in a chaotic incident in the Gaza Strip where Israeli forces opened fire on starving Palestinian civilians gathered around food aid trucks, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. CNN could not independently confirm these numbers.

Civilians huddled around newly arrived humanitarian aid trucks in the hope of receiving food, but Israeli tanks and drones began firing on people on Haroun Al-Rashid Street in western Gaza City’s Sheikh Ajlin neighborhood.

An Israeli official told CNN that Israeli forces opened fire on people surrounding the aid trucks because “the crowd approached the forces in a way that posed a threat to the troops, who responded to the threat with live fire. The incident is under investigation.” – said an Israeli official.

Aid trucks tried to flee the area, accidentally colliding with each other and causing more deaths and injuries, witnesses told CNN.

The UN Secretary-General condemns what Hamas says have killed around a hundred people during a food aid distribution that has turned into a nightmare in Gaza, his spokesman said, according to AFP.

“We don’t know exactly what happened. But whether these people were killed by Israeli fire, whether they were trampled by the crowd, whether they were trampled by trucks, these are acts of violence related in some way to this conflict,” said Stéphane Dujarric, adding that there was no UN presence at this action from aid distribution.

The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors at 21:15 GMT on Thursday after Hamas killed around a hundred people during a food aid distribution that turned into a nightmare in Gaza, according to an updated council agenda.

According to a diplomatic source, Algeria requested an emergency meeting.
