Electric cars: after large SUVs, make room for sports cars. Auto Plus news in your smartphone

Mercedes EQC, Audi e-tron, BMW iX3, Jaguar F-Pace… In the late 2010s, the first electric models offered by “traditional” manufacturers did not necessarily radiate sportiness, despite the excessive power for some.

This was quickly followed by the arrival of other electric models from other manufacturers, still mainly in the SUV segment, a segment that allows, in particular, to dilute the sometimes indigestible price of batteries in a high-class package around a body that tempts, all at a final price that’s just as indigestible but less than if it were a city car or a compact car.

Electric city cars are back to clean things up, with more “reasonable” prices (and again…), and the major players in the industry generally agree that electric cars will get cheaper and cheaper.

MG, the most offensive manufacturer?

Furthermore, they also don’t forget, at least for those who have it in their DNA, that a car can also be an object of pleasure, and even if the equation between passion and electricity can be difficult for some, Manufacturers do not intend to draw a line under the vector image of these cars. While major brands have been electrifying their everyday vehicles for some time now, the wind of electric sportiness is now blowing through the industry. Among the many electric SUVs and sedans currently flooding the market, several models stand out for their aggressive looks and impressive performance.
At the recent Geneva Motor Show, MG caused a sensation by introducing (again) the Cyberster, the first production electric convertible on the market. Thanks to its sporty futuristic lines and gull-wing doors, the roadster promises acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. Thanks to the 72 kWh batteries, the Cyberster also has a range of over 400 kilometers. But MG does not stop there. In addition to the Cyberster cabriolet, scheduled for late 2024, the manufacturer already offers an X-Power version of its MG4. Equipped with 435 horsepower, this version was able to win over 10% of MG4 buyers in France, in particular thanks to the attractive price from 40,490 euros.

Electric cars with amazing performance

Other players are also starting this race for sports electrification. Volkswagen, Alpine and other brands have already taken the electric turn, sometimes producing powerful monsters such as Lotus Evija, Rimac Nevera or Pininfarina Battista, models that significantly exceed 1000 or even 2000 hp.
Tesla, a pioneer in the field of electrics, started with a roadster, adapting batteries and an electric motor to a Lotus Elise chassis. Soon the Roadster will return with promised exceptional performance, and the Model 3 will soon receive a new Plaid version.

And small “affordable” electric cars?

Volkswagen also plans to launch a GTI version of its small electric ID.2 in 2026, while Renault unveiled its electric Renault 5 in Geneva and is preparing to unveil its first electric Alpine on the same platform. The appointment is scheduled for June next year. Stellantis, for its part, has already released a sporty version of its Fiat 500, the Abarth 500e, and also introduced the new 240-horsepower Abarth 600e.
Hyundai, for its part, is gearing up to deliver its first N-badged Ioniq 5 in the spring with a purpose “Combination of heat and electricity” in particular, recreating the sound and feel of driving traditional cars. As for Kia, the brand already offers the EV6 GT, an electric crossover with a capacity of 585 hp.

Chinese brands like BYD are also showing confidence, with models like the Seal developing up to 530 horsepower for €50,000 and even the Yangwang U9 luxury electric sports car with more than 1,000 horsepower, BYD aims to compete with the European giants in this level.
