Google announced on Thursday that it is shutting down its artificial intelligence imaging feature Gemini after it said it offered “inaccurate” historical images, CNBC reported, citing News.ro.
Users on social media complained that the AI tool created images of historical figures – such as the founding fathers of the US – as black people, calling it inaccurate.
Google said in a post on X on Wednesday that the AI feature can “generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing, because people all over the world use it.”
But he said the software feature “fails”, adding that the tech giant is “working to improve these types of views immediately”.
Google issued an updated statement on Thursday, saying it will end Gemini’s ability to create images of people and will soon relaunch an “improved” version.
The imaging tool was launched in early February by Gemini, formerly known as Bard.
It faces challenges as Google tries to catch up with Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
Gemini declined to release any images Thursday morning when tested by a CNBC reporter.
While Google tries to create images with Gemini, Open AI last week launched Sora, its new generative AI model that can create videos from users’ text messages.
The company’s imaging capabilities reflect the tech giant’s “global user base,” and it takes “representation and bias” seriously, Jack Krawczyk, senior director of Gemini products at Google, said Wednesday.
“We will continue to do this for open requests (photos of a person walking a dog are universal!). Historical contexts are more nuanced, and we will continue to adapt to accommodate that,” Krawczyk said in a post on X.
Google released Gemini, its most advanced AI model, in late 2023. This month, the company also rebranded Bard, its ChatGPT competitor, as Gemini.
Google went on to launch a subscription service for a more powerful version of the AI model.
