Here’s a tried-and-true solution: If your phone gets wet, put it in a bag or bowl of rice. This is not a good idea! Apple has updated the instructions and added a paragraph that clearly states that you should NOT put a wet iPhone in a fig.
Apple says that if you put your iPhone in rice, the tiny particles could damage the phone. The company says it’s best to remove moisture by hand – holding the phone with the charging port facing down – and let it dry for at least half an hour before opening or charging.
The company also says that you should NOT dry the phone with a hair dryer or radiator, or try to insert foreign objects into the phone.
MacWorld is the site that first wrote about Apple’s changes to the manual.
It’s a myth that you have to put a wet phone in rice, the idea is that dry rice has absorbent properties and helps a lot. Especially after 2000, there were people who put Nokia phones in rice that got wet from rain or because they fell in the bathtub or in bowls of water.
Several experts have tested the rice technique and concluded that it does not help.
The good thing is that phones are becoming more and more water resistant, so there is much less risk of a wet phone not working if it gets wet.
