Lufthansa strike paralyzes German airports again
February 20, 2024
Another strike by employees of German airline Lufthansa has canceled most flights at seven German airports across the country.
More than 100,000 flight passengers were affected by the industrial action, with Frankfurt and Munich airports particularly affected. The strike, initiated by the Verdi union, began at 4am local German time on Tuesday and will end shortly after 7am on Wednesday.
Some IT workers and technicians began industrial action even earlier, on Monday night.
Lufthansa on Tuesday advised customers not to come to the airport if their flight is cancelled. It said it only got 10 to 20 percent of its flight schedule on the affected days.
It is the second time that Lufthansa workers have gone on strike this month. Regular industrial action is an attempt to pressure Lufthansa management to increase wages and provide a bonus to help employees deal with inflation.
“We have already proven twice that we can attack,” Verdi representative Marvin Reschinsky told German news agency dpa on Tuesday.
As many workers continue to participate in the action, Reschinsky suggested: “It would therefore be sensible to reach a conclusion now.”
