The capital Zaleu, Alba Iulia and Timisoara are the cities with the most expensive food basket in the country, while Constanta, Slobozia and Iași are the cheapest, according to HotNews calculations based on basic food prices and salary levels. The data sets for food and wages are provided to us by the National Institute for Statistics, the figures are weighted by their “weight” in the consumer basket (according to the INS) and by wage level, and the calculations are for the month of November 2023.
Instead, “food inflation” – the increase in the price of products in the consumer basket from November 2023 compared to November 2022 – was the highest in Rymnik-Vilča – more than 26%, Tirgovishte – more than 20% and Vaslui – almost 20%, statistics also show.
When calculating the consumer basket, the following products were taken into account: potatoes, dried beans, dried onions, autumn cabbage, pork, dried garlic, carrots, fruits (apples), apples, cow’s milk, telemea sheep cheese and eggs.
The most expensive and cheapest consumer basket is shown in the graph below:
For example, the most expensive potatoes are in Rimnik-Vilca, in Cluj we find the most expensive dry beans, Zalăul is the “champion” of the price of dry onions, in Calarasi and Cluj cabbage is the most expensive in the country, milk is more expensive than in Giurgiu and Tulcea you won’t find it, in Bucharest and Slatina have the most expensive sheep farm, and the most expensive eggs can be bought in Fokšani.
