On Thursday, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced that almost a million people have been drafted into the Ukrainian army, but most of them were not on the front lines.
According to the website Suspîlne, quoted by News.ro, Mykhailo Podoliak said that only 200,000-300,000 soldiers were actually mobilized on the battlefield.
On Ukrainian television, Podolyak stated that the purpose of the inspection of the new army chief is to determine “who among the people is mobilized, where they are and what they are doing.” Then he will be able to tell “how many people are needed” on the front lines, he explained.
The former commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny was fired on Thursday due to alleged disagreements with the president, including over the number of people to be mobilized. The insurgents would demand another 450,000 – 500,000 people.
Commenting on the situation with mobilization, Podolyak noted that there is currently no concrete number of 500,000 persons fit for military service who must be mobilized.
“At the final press conference, the president said: if the Armed Forces want, for example, 450,000 – that’s what they say – they should clearly say for what, for which tasks and how it will be regulated in the future,” said Podolyak. According to him, if there is an order to attract a certain number of people to perform certain tasks, the question arises as to how it will be financed.
As for the mobilization, Podolyak noted, it is not a one-time mobilization – for example, 100, 200, 500 thousand people, but a gradual mobilization. At the same time, he added that within a month, a certain number of people should be put on the military register, some of whom will go to training, and then to rotation.
Podolyak also said that in order to cover the shortage of forces, the military commissariats will also work around the clock.
