A new tactic by Ukrainian drone operators puts the Russian military in an awkward position and worries Russian military bloggers, according to military analyst Samuel Bendett, an expert on the use of advanced autonomous technologies on the battlefield.

Bendett Write it down on his page “X”, the former Twitter, that Russian military bloggers, who have hundreds of thousands of followers on social networks and Telegram, are concerned about the night tactics used by the Ukrainians.

This involves launching a wave of drones flying at different altitudes, with one hovering closer to the ground with its navigation lights on. Her task is to attract the attention of Russian ground soldiers to provoke them to open fire on her, revealing their positions.

As this happens, other surveillance drones flying above the ground with their lights off are recording the positions of the Russian soldiers.

“The general idea is simple: You either just expose the Russians’ positions, or you hit them with artillery,” explains Bendett, an analyst at the Center for Naval Research and the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Drones played a role in the war in Ukraine, which in terms of importance exceeded all expectations of most analysts and military theorists, as recently demonstrated by the former chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Yuriy Baluyevsky.

A military branch of drones will appear in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced on Tuesday that he had signed a “strategic” decree to create a separate body in the Ukrainian armed forces to deal with drones, as Kyiv increasingly relies on the technology after the failure of its offensive last summer.

He wanted to emphasize that this new force “is not a matter of the future,” but “is something that should give a very concrete result in the near future.”

“Drones – unmanned aerial systems – have proven their effectiveness in ground, air and sea battles. Ukraine really changed the unmanned situation in the Black Sea thanks to drones. Repelling ground assaults is mostly the work of drones. Large-scale destruction of the occupiers and their equipment is also the work of drones,” Zelensky emphasized.

The Ukrainian leader also said that now, when creating a special force dedicated to drones, special positions will be created for personnel who work with unmanned aerial vehicles, there will be special units that will receive effective training and systematization of experience. In addition, the production of drones will be constantly increased, the “best ideas” will be taken into account and the best specialists in this field will be involved.

“This is a task for the army, the Ministry of Defense, and the government as a whole,” Zelenskyi said.

His announcement came after he promised Ukraine’s military last December that the country would achieve a production capacity of one million drones a year, but a growing number of Kyiv soldiers are reporting problems with the quality of the equipment they receive.
