Buckingham Palace announced Monday that Britain’s 75-year-old King Charles III has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was discovered during a prostate enlargement operation.

The type of cancer was not disclosed, but according to a statement from Buckingham Palace, the king began “usual treatment” on Monday, according to the BBC, taken from News.ro.

Buckingham Palace says the king “remains entirely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full government duties as soon as possible.”

He will postpone public engagements and other senior members of the royal family are expected to stand in for him while he receives treatment.

No other details about the cancer’s stage or prognosis were released.

Although he will suspend his public engagements, King Charles, 75, will remain in his constitutional role as head of state.

He was seen at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday, where he greeted the crowd.

The British monarch, who ascended the throne after the death of his mother on September 8, 2022, underwent prostate surgery at a private hospital in London more than a week ago.

The king decided to publicize his treatment for an enlarged prostate to encourage more men to get tested, Buckingham Palace said at the time. The King was pleased to raise awareness of the problem after the health service’s website reported an increase in the number of referrals related to prostate disease.
