The risk of avalanches in the mountains of Rodna and Maramures is increasing due to the large amount of snow, as well as the wind, said Elian Antal, representative of the public service of the Salvamont Maramures district.

“Avalanche risk in the mountains of Rodna and Maramures, degree 4-5 (MAXIMUM) from a height of 1300 m above sea level to the alpine range. Parts of the mountain with eastern, northern and southern exposures are extremely wind and heavy snowfall. Where the wind was also loaded, when probing with the provided equipment, the thickness of the snow layer exceeds 150-170 cm,” Elian Antal said, according to Agerpres.

According to the same source, as a result of the snowfall in the last few days, there are two layers of snow on the mountain overlapping each other, which increases the risk of an avalanche.

“There are two layers of 20-25 cm, the lower one has no connection with the base, and the upper one is also loaded with fresh snow, which accumulated after yesterday’s (Friday – no) and today’s (Saturday – no) about 10. -20 cm “The possible causes of the avalanche are snow deposits and massive wind slabs with instability in the middle layer,” Elian Antal explained.
