Minister of National Defense Ángel Tilvar, accompanied by the Chief of the General Staff of Defense, General Giorgice Vlad, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Naval Forces, Vice-Admiral Mihai Panait, visited the Damen Naval Shipyard in Galata on Thursday.
The minister was presented with naval architecture projects, as well as marine design and engineering projects developed for the navies of various treaty countries, developed by more than 185 Romanian engineers from Marine Engineering Galati (MEGA), the company that operates the Galati shipyard platform.
The MApN delegation also visited two vessels currently under construction at the Damen shipyard docks to be handed over to external beneficiaries.
“The creation of more than 1,500 jobs, many of which are highly qualified, as well as the attraction of important orders from the governments of some NATO member countries, the EU or other parts of the world bring prestige and benefit not only to the company, but also to Galați and Romania,” said Angel Tylvar, according to MApN’s statement.
The Minister of Defense also noted the importance of Damen’s decisions to train locally both the highly qualified specialists involved in the design processes and the workforce involved in ship production, through cooperation with Romanian engineering universities or through its own specialist training center established in within the Galati construction site.
Tilvar also spoke about the need to equip the Romanian army with modern technologies produced in the country, in the context of the war in Ukraine led by Russia.
“The aggressive behavior of the Russian Federation, which ended with the invasion of Ukraine, unfortunately turned the Black Sea region into a conflict zone. This new reality requires rethinking and adapting our naval security. The Romanian Navy has ongoing important funding programs that will allow it to carry out its missions more effectively,” said Ángel Tilvar.
We remind you that after the biggest failure of Romania in the field of military procurement – the cancellation of the mega contract for corvettes with the French from the Naval Group after almost 7 years of procedures, tenders and delays, Romania practically abandons the idea of a corvette, at least in the near future, and quickly reorients to other types of ships, some built in the country, as well as for emergency modernization of some current ships in the Navy, several ministry and industry sources told HotNews. ro.
