Turkey’s parliament will vote on Sweden’s NATO membership this week, Turkish media reported, while a parliamentary source told AFP that ratification could take place on Thursday, AFP reported.
The vote will take place on Tuesday, CNN Turk, a private channel, said, while others such as NTV said this week, without giving a specific date.
A parliament official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP that lawmakers could discuss the issue and vote on Thursday.
After Turkey’s ratification, Hungary will be the only obstacle to the accession process, which Sweden and its Finnish neighbor launched in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago.
Sweden’s request was approved by the Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs committee in late December, but a plenary vote was postponed.
Turkey, like Hungary, blocked Sweden’s path, increasing its demands and reasons to justify its reluctance.
Sweden applied for membership at the same time as Finland, which was accepted in April.
From the start of the process, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has opposed Stockholm’s perceived leniency towards certain Kurdish groups he considers terrorists.
In early December, Erdogan added as a condition for Ankara’s ratification “simultaneous” approval by the US Congress for the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, needed to modernize its air force.
The US government is not hostile to the sale, but Congress has so far blocked it for political reasons, including tensions with Greece – also a NATO member – with which Ankara has recently moved closer.
Last month, Erdogan spoke by phone with US President Joe Biden, who argued that Turkey could get the necessary approval from Congress if it ratified Sweden’s NATO membership.
