Russian lawmakers have drafted a bill that would allow confiscation of money and property from people who spread “deliberately false information” about the country’s armed forces, a senior member of parliament said on Saturday.
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said the measure would also apply to those found guilty of what he called other forms of treason.
Among them are the “discrediting” of the armed forces, calls for sanctions against Russia or incitement to extremist activities.
“All those who are trying to destroy Russia, those who betray it, should suffer the deserved punishment and compensate the damage caused to the country at the cost of their own benefits,” Volodin wrote in Telegram.
According to him, the bill will be presented to the State Duma, the lower house of the parliament, on Monday.
Since sending its troops to Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has stepped up a long campaign of repression against all forms of political dissent.
According to laws adopted in March of the same year, discrediting the armed forces or spreading false information about them is already punishable by a long prison term.
