Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku says that no family doctor will close his office and says that negotiations will be held. “There are family doctors who earn per capita, not necessarily on medical services, more than 10,000-15,000 euros,” he says, noting that these amounts seem “a bit high.” Cholaku adds that he wants more and more health problems to be solved in the primary care system, writes News.ro.

“No family doctor’s office will be closed. Indeed, I do not want a decrease, but an increase in medical services, balanced if there is a decrease per capita (the point allocated to health care is not). (…) Let the family doctors remain calm, because they will negotiate. Indeed, I want more services, I want Romanians not to go to the hospital very quickly and for many problems to be solved in the field of family doctors,” said Marcel Colacu on Antena 3 on Monday evening.

He stated that some of the amounts that some family doctors earn seem “a bit high”.

  • “Do you think it’s fair to have a cap on GP incomes? I asked for all the stats. There are family doctors who earn per capita, not necessarily on medical services, more than 10,000-15,000 euros. The amounts seem a bit high to me. That is why there are negotiations, we sit down at the table, find a balance.
  • We have to get this country in order, we have to get rid of the exceptions. There cannot be doctors in big developed cities earning more than 15,000 euros and a doctor in a rural area, perhaps with more elderly people and more work, more travel, to earn a very small amount. We must find a balance, there must be social justice,” said Marcel Cholaku.

He added that the Romanian state spends approximately one billion euros per month through CNAS on the health care system.
