Solid-state batteries have been at the center of debate for several months. Such increased attention is to some extent explained by the expectation of a revolution in the field of electric vehicles.
As an example, we can cite the ambitions of Honda, which wants to produce an economical car, but the breakthrough in battery technology will not happen until the advent of solid-state batteries. Nissan and Toyota, for their part, plan to integrate them into their production from 2028.
However, not everyone is convinced that solid-state batteries are the key to the future of electric cars. Meanwhile, Lithium-ion batteries appear to be making significant progress, sparking renewed interest.
Mercedes was not convinced
Markus Schaefer, Mercedes’ chief technical officer, said improvements in the energy density of lithium-ion batteries had been achieved. “unexpected”. So much so that, according to him, they could compete “head” with solid-state batteries in terms of cost and energy density.
Mercedes remains generally skeptical about the need for solid-state batteries for future electric vehicles. Markus Schaefer suggests that the development of lithium batteries could make them the same or even more competitive. He claims that he did not see a “a large advantage in terms of cost or energy”.
However, Markus Schaefer admits that solid-state batteries have a safety advantage, but insists that lithium-ion technology is just as promising. However, Mercedes does not rule out the possibility of involvement in startups that are engaged in the development of solid-state batteries, so as not to close the door.
Advantages of a solid-state battery
Solid-state batteries, or solid-state batteries, have a number of advantages: they offer more autonomy for less volumeand the service life may exceed 15 years, which will allow the electric car to be used longer than today.
Charging times are also greatly improved, with some actually being able to charge up to 80% in just a few minutes, significantly reducing the time you have to stop at a charging station during long journeys. Solid-state batteries also have the environmental advantage of containing fewer heavy metals and limiting the risk of fire.
