Rafael Nadal returned after a year on the tennis court, but the great Iberian champion was injured again in Brisbane and announced that he will not play in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.
Rafael Nadal will not play at the 2024 Australian Open
“Hi everyone! During the last match in Brisbane I had a bit of a muscle problem which as you know has been bothering me.
When I arrived in Melbourne I had the opportunity to have an MRI and I have a torn muscle, but not in the part where the injury was (Australian Open 2023 – no) and that’s good news.
At this point, I am not ready to compete at the highest level in 5-set matches. I will fly back to Spain to see the doctor, get treatment and rest.
I have always worked hard throughout the year for this comeback, and as I have always stated, my goal is to be at my peak in 3 months.
Although it’s sad news for me that I can’t play in front of a fantastic crowd in Melbourne, it’s not too bad news and we remain positive about the way forward for the rest of the season.
I really wanted to play in Australia and I got a chance to play some matches which made me very happy and positive. Thank you for your support and see you soon” – Rafael Nadal.
