PV and wind power installations in Germany hit record levels in 2023, but only PV meets targets set out in the government’s Berlin strategy, the renewable energy industry association said on Tuesday, hoping for another increase this year amid delays , Reuters and Agerpres report.
Germany’s strategic goal is for renewables to cover 80% of electricity needs in 2030, up from 52% in 2023.
The German Solar Industry Association (BSW) said on Tuesday that more than one million photovoltaic systems capable of producing 14 gigawatts of energy were installed in Germany last year, an 85% increase from 2022, thanks to a sharp increase in demand for photovoltaic systems. in the housing sector, putting the sector on a trajectory that will allow it to reach the 2030 target set by the Berlin authorities.
Last year, Germany’s residential segment alone saw 7 gigawatts of installed PV capacity, up 135% year-on-year, equivalent to half of total installed capacity. Almost 31% of new capacity, or 4.3 gigawatts, was installed in solar parks, a 40% increase over 2022, BSW added.
The association expects demand to continue growing this year, citing survey results showing more than 1.5 million homeowners intend to install rooftop solar.
“We expect a sustainable PV boom in 2024,” said BSW president Carsten Kernig, who called for red tape to be cut, for example by making it easier to access suitable sites for building PV farms.
In the wind sector, capacity tenders also reached a record level last year, at around 6.4 gigawatts, but even so they fell short of the government’s target in Berlin, which wants to install onshore capacity by 2030. The German Wind Energy Association (BWE) reported last week 10 gigawatts each year. According to this association, measures to reduce red tape in the sector are still lacking, and new legislative provisions passed last year have not yet fully come into effect.
