Not surprisingly, 2023 has become the best year for electric cars in France. There are many reasons (more affordable models, restrictions, subsidies, more offers, etc.) and this is reflected in increased sales and market shares.
According to a report published by the Automotive Platform (PFA), which represents manufacturers and equipment manufacturers, a quarter of the cars sold in France in 2023 were electrified.
Electricity is still gaining momentum
The figures show that there were fully electric cars 16.8% of new registrations, while plug-in hybrids make up 9.2% of vehicles on the market. In 2022, the share of electric vehicles was 13.3%, and PHEVs – 8.3%.
At the same time, gasoline engines maintained their stability, accounting for more than a third of the vehicle fleet in circulation. It’s also no surprise that diesel continues to decline, with only one in ten new cars sold in 2023 being diesel-powered.
According to the Association of Electric Mobility Professionals (Avere), there are already more than 1.5 million electric and hybrid cars on French roads.
Tesla is still the leader, but…
At the moment, Tesla is positioned as the undisputed leader of the electric market in France and Europe. With models like the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV, the American brand dominates sales. However, with recent changes in government incentives that exclude some cars, including Chinese models and the Tesla Model 3, from the subsidy scheme, this trend can be reversed in 2024.
However, this year the share of electric cars may still grow, in particular with the introduction of social leasing, the LOA system at affordable rates. At less than €100 per month for city dwellers and €150 for family cars (excluding insurance and maintenance), the program is initially aimed at “active heavy duty drivers”.
The plan is to eventually expand it to cover the bottom half of households, thus allowing low-income households to take advantage of electric mobility. Only 20,000 to 25,000 files will be stored at this time, but this number may increase over the course of a year.
