The reasons for the dispute between the Turks and the Saudis and the postponement of the match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce

The past few hours have been somewhat turbulent between the leaders of the Turkish Football Federation and the government of Saudi Arabia over the Super Cup dispute in Riyadh.

Title holders Galatasaray were due to face Cup winners Fenerbahce, but the match, which was due to start at 19:45, was postponed after both teams refused to play, AS.com reports.

Both formations demanded that the national anthem be sung before the game, and a banner with a quote from the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, “Peace in the country and in the world” appeared in the stands.

In addition, both teams wore training shirts with the image of Atatürk, a claim strongly denied by the Saudi authorities.

The celebrations included, among other things, a moment of silence to honor the memory of Turkish soldiers who died in the line of duty, and the fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership of the federation, which could not agree with the Saudi side.

In the end, the players of “Galatasaray” and “Fenerbahce” decided not to leave the hotel for the KDU stadium in Riyadh, the match was postponed and the teams will return to Turkey as soon as possible.
