On Thursday, the government approved a regulation that stipulates that until electronic ID cards are introduced nationally, Romanians can travel abroad with regular ID cards issued after December 31, 2023, reports Agerpres.

According to the Government’s press release, this emergency decree adopted by the Government amends part (3) of Article 13 of GEO No. 97/2005 so that identity cards issued after December 31, 2023 remain valid in certain travel documents. .

The measure was taken in order not to restrict citizens’ right to free movement until the introduction of the electronic identity card into circulation at the national level.

Thus, identity cards issued before December 31, 2023 during the period of validity will be a travel document in the member states of the European Union, as well as in third countries that recognize them as a travel document, under the conditions established by European rules.

In January of this year, Katelin Julescu, head of the MAI’s Office of Population Registration, announced to the government that the issuance of the first 5 million electronic identity cards will be supported by PNRR funds, with other funding sources. found later, including from the budget, so that citizens do not pay money for the first registration of such an act.

Çolaku’s government reduced the financial allocation originally provided for in the PNRR for the so-called chip ballots after negotiations with the European Executive. If initially it was about 200 million euros for 8.5 million electronic certificates, then in the updated PNRR the amount was reduced to 150 million euros for 5 million documents.

Now the executive power is preparing a mechanism by which it will bear the costs of the first ballots with a chip.
