Lieutenant General Martin Wijnen, the commander-in-chief of the Dutch army, who will retire in 2024, said that the Netherlands and its society should prepare for a possible war with the Russian Federation, reports Ukrainian Pravda.

“The Netherlands should seriously fear war and our society should prepare for it,” Wijnen told De Telegraaf.

“The whole society should be ready if something goes wrong. The Netherlands should not think that our security is guaranteed because we are 1,500 kilometers (from the Russians – ed.),” Wijnen said, adding that civilians should have food and drinking water supplies in case of emergencies.

The top general warned the public that Russia continues to strengthen, so a strong army is needed as a deterrent.

“There is only one language that Russia understands, and that is the language of a strong army,” Wijnen said, stressing the importance of solving the problem of understaffing in the Dutch armed forces.
