Vehicle recalls are a regular practice in the automotive industry. Every year, manufacturers organize numerous campaigns to eliminate defects found on certain models after their placement on the market. These situations are usually the result of failures of components supplied by suppliers, which require technical adjustments or even complete replacement. Even if these incidents are not dramatic, given the inherent inaccuracy of the mechanics, they occur frequently. A computer error that causes excessive emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

Today it is the Stellantis group, which is launching a mass recall due to a malfunction in the engine’s electronic computer (in English ECU, for engine control unit). It is the “brain” of the vehicle, which receives information from various sensors (temperature, pressure, speed, impact, emissions) and adjusts several organs and software to ensure optimal operation of the vehicle. In this case, the calculator of several diesel models of the Stellantis group incorrectly processes the data coming from the exhaust line. It responds by adjusting the emissions control system in a distorted manner, causing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions exceed regulatory limits set by the European Union. Affected models Peugeot, Citroëns, Opel and DS manufactured after 2022.
