Poland has given the go-ahead to build 24 new small modular reactors (SMRs) at six sites, executives at the company that will build the nuclear facilities said on Thursday, as Warsaw seeks to reduce its use of fossil fuels.
The government has said it aims to accelerate the phase-out of coal and plans to build renewable and nuclear energy infrastructure to meet the challenges of climate change and ensure a stable energy supply.
Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), a joint venture between Poland’s largest oil refinery operator Orlen and chemical company Synthos, plans to deploy the country’s first small reactors by 2030.
“The Polish government has decided to take a principled decision and has approved six sites for the deployment of 24 state-of-the-art GE Hitachi BWRX-300 units in Poland,” said OSGE Executive Director Rafal Kasprow at the Net Zero Nuclear Summit taking place during COP28 in Dubai.
“This is truly a new beginning – a new era – for Poland,” he added.
The Polish Ministry of Climate announced that the reactors will be built in Wlocławek, Stava Monowskie, Stałowa Wola, Ostrolenka, Nowa Huta and Domrowa Hornicza.
