One person was killed and two others were injured after a man attacked several tourists in central Paris near the Eiffel Tower, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The police quickly detained a 26-year-old French citizen with the help of a stun gun, Darmanin told the mass media.

The interior minister added that the suspect was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for planning another attack. He was on the list of the French security services and also had psychiatric disorders.

The attack took place around 19:00 GMT (21:00 in Romania) when a man attacked a couple of tourists with a knife on the Grenelle embankment, meters from the Eiffel Tower, fatally injuring a German national.

He was then chased by police and attacked two other people with a hammer before being arrested.

The suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” and told police he was angry because “so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and Palestine” and was affected by the situation in Gaza, Darmanin said.
