Nissan has just announced that its UK factory in Sunderland will become the production site for 3 new models with zero emissions : future Nissan Qashqai, Juke and Leaf are 100% electric. The Japanese manufacturer has made a huge investment of 3.46 billion euros to achieve carbon neutrality at its plant in England as part of the EV36Zero project.

“Electric cars are the basis of our plans to achieve carbon neutrality. With electric versions of our core European models, we are entering a new era for Nissan, for the industry and for our customers.”Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said: “The EV36Zero project puts our Sunderland plant, the largest automotive plant ever built in Britain, at the heart of our vision for the future. This means our UK team will be responsible for the design, development and production of the cars of the future, leading us to a 100% electric future for Nissan in Europe.”.

Nissan: 3 new 100% electric cars

Famous Nissan Qashqai accounts for no less than a fifth of all cars produced in the United Kingdom: its new generation will be inspired by the Nissan Hyper Urban concept car, an all-electric model recently unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show with a refined and modern aesthetic.

THE Nissan Juke — a popular compact SUV that has sold more than a million copies. Its next generation will draw inspiration from the Nissan Hyper Punk concept car, a 100% electric model also unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, with assertive, multi-faceted styling.

There Nissan Leaf is one of the world’s pioneers in electric cars, with more than 250,000 compact examples produced in Sunderland, and the next generation will be inspired by the Nissan Chill-Out concept car, presented in 2021.

A major investment in the United Kingdom

In recent years, the Japanese manufacturer has invested heavily in upgrading its English factory in Sunderland to turn it into production site for 100% electric modelsspecializing, in particular, in vehicles and their batteries.

The initial investment of £1 billion (approximately €1.16 billion) in Nissan’s Sunderland plant will be supplemented by further investment to build an additional gigafactory, as well as infrastructure projects worth up to £2 billion (equivalent). to approximately €2.31 billion), for a total of three billion pounds, equivalent to approx 3.46 billion euros.

To achieve carbon neutrality, Nissan also uses renewable energy sourcesin particular, using wind and solar energy to meet the electricity needs of its industrial site in Sunderland.
