Social media company X sued the watchdog group Media Matters on Monday, alleging the organization defamed the platform after it published a report that ads from major brands appeared alongside posts promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party , reports Reuters.
X, formerly Twitter, faced growing outrage after Media Matters published a report on Thursday that prompted IBM, Comcast and several other major advertisers to respond by removing ads from the platform.
The report also comes a day after X owner Elon Musk expressed his agreement with a post on the platform that falsely claimed that Jews incite hatred against whites.
In a lawsuit filed in Texas District Court, X alleged that Media Matters “manipulated” the social media platform by using accounts that only follow major brands or users known to create fringe content and “resorted to endless scrolling and update” feed until he found the ad alongside the extremist posts.
The Media Matters report misrepresented typical experiences with X “with the intent to harm X and its business,” the company said in its lawsuit.
Media Matters president Angelo Carusone called the lawsuit “frivolous” in an emailed statement and said it was “designed to intimidate X’s critics into silence.”
“Media Matters stands by its messages and hopes to win the case,” he added.
