Nigeria have had a disastrous start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wants to sack coach Jose Peseiro (former Rapid coach).
Nigeria doesn’t have the money to fire coach Jose Peseira
Nigeria unexpectedly drew with Lesotho (1-1) and Zimbabwe (1-1) and qualification for the 2026 finals tournament is now in jeopardy. The NFF has said it will sack the Portuguese coach but does not have the money to pay him compensation.
“If we had the money, we would be ready to remove him from office, we are not satisfied with this. Everyone is calling for the head coach to be fired. Out of six possible points, we have only two. It is unfortunate and we are in a very dangerous situation” – Nse Essienmember of the executive committee of the NFF.
Nigeria, who also failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, will have to play in the Africa Cup of Nations (January 2024), followed by matches against South Africa and Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers (June 2024).
Jose Peseiro has been coaching the Nigerian national team since 2022. In Romania, the Portuguese played 18 matches on the bench of Rapida Bucharest (2008-2009).
