Rimac Nevera: a new speed record… In reverse! Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

After setting the Nürburgring lap record, over 20 speed and braking records, and impressive acceleration victories over super sports cars, Rimac Never won almost everything… But it still wasn’t enough, so the Rimac teams decided to end the year with fun and victory records on the contrary !

“During development, we thought the Nevera would probably be the fastest rear-wheel drive car in the world, but we had a bit of a laugh about it. After all, aerodynamics, cooling, and stability aren’t designed for high-speed reverse. But then we started talking about how interesting it would be to try. Our simulations showed that we could go well above 240 km/h, but we had no idea how stable it would be: we were entering uncharted territory.– says Matia Renich, chief engineer of the Nevera program at Bugatti Rimac.

Rimac Nevera: over 275 km/h in reverse

In 1967, the Lamborghini Miura became the fastest production car in the world, thanks to its impressive V12 engine, which allowed it to exceed 230 km/h for the first time in history. More than fifty years later, the Rimac Nevera has just surpassed this symbolic speed, but in reverse.

The record was achieved at the Automotive Testing Papenburg plant in Germany, where the Rimac Nevera broke more than 20 acceleration and braking records in one day, and its the maximum speed record is 412 km/h.

Rimac Nevera has just officially won the title Guinness Book of Records with the fastest speed in the world in reverseverified using data measured by Dewesoft: 275.74 km/h very accurate! The model used is the Nevera Time Attack Edition, the same one used to set the previous records, and which is a limited edition of only 12 examples worldwide.

An incredible performance

Unlike a thermal car, the Rimac Nevera’s transmission has no gears: so the four 100% electric motors work equally, whether in reverse or forward, with equal performance, allowing it to swallow Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.8 secondsfrom 0 to 200 km/h in 4.4 seconds or from 0 to 300 km/h in 9.2 seconds.

However, achieving this performance in the reverse direction was a feat: “It took some getting used to the race itself. You look straight back and watch the scenery recede faster and faster, feeling your neck snap forward, almost as it normally does when you brake hard.”Goran Drndak, Rimac test pilot, testifies: “You steer gently, taking care not to lose balance, control your trajectory and brake in the rear-view mirror, taking care of your speed. Despite the fact that the design of the car was almost completely unnatural, Nevera broke a new record. »
