Canada won the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time

Having reached the finals of the competition for the first time, the North American team did not even need to play in doubles to win.

A year later, Canadian players followed the example of the country’s men’s team, which in 2022 won the Davis Cup for the first time, defeating Australia in the final.

21-year-old Leila Fernandez, ranked 35th in the world, brought the trophy home to Canada with a straight-sets win over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, 27 and ranked 30th in the WTA rankings, 6-2, 6-3.

The first match of the day was won in straight sets by Marina Stakusych, world number 258, against Martina Trevisan, world number 43, 7-5, 6-3. It was an important win for the 18-year-old, her first against a top-50 player.

Canada has replaced Billie Jean King Cup champion Switzerland in 2022, News.ro reports.
