The hospital has been the subject of much debate – Israel has claimed that Hamas stored weapons under the building to maximize possible civilian casualties – something the militants deny.

“Division 162 has been operating in the center of Gaza City for the past few days, in the area of the Hamas military quarter; forces of the Givati Brigade eliminated approximately 50 terrorists,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

In a coordinated attack involving infantry, tanks, snipers, special forces and the air force, the Israeli military said it “worked to clear the area and neutralize the terrorist infrastructure … including an extensive network of underground tunnels.”

The IDF also said it had found military intelligence documents belonging to Hamas.

He said the area was the “heart of intelligence and operational activity” where Hamas planned the October 7 attacks.

“The military quarter consists of strategic terrorist bases of Hamas, including the headquarters of the intelligence services and the headquarters of aerial antennas,” the statement said.

The army said it also found a police station, government offices used by Hamas and a training center for its fighters.
