​Italy and Canada won Wednesday’s opening matches of the Billie Jean King Cup finals, hosted by Sevilla.

Italy beat France 2-1 in Group D, which also includes Germany.

Alize Cornet (118 WTA) was beaten in the first singles match by Martina Trevisan (43 WTA) 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Caroline Garcia (World No. 20) lost in three sets to Jasmine Paolini (WTA No. 30), 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4. Garcia missed four set points in the first set and led 4-2 in the deciding set.

The point of honor for France was won by the pair of Caroline Garcia / Kristina Mladenovic after 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 with the pair of Martina Trevisan / Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Canada beat Spain 3-0 in Group C.

Maryna Stakusych (258 world ranking) managed to win the match against her opponent with a much better rating Rebeka Masarova (65 WTA) with a direct score of 6-3, 6-1, informs Agerpres.

Then Leila Fernandez (35 WTA) managed to win at the end of the match with Sara Sorribes Tormo (50 WTA), whom she defeated with a score of 7-6(8), 7-6(7).

In doubles, Eugenie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowski won 6-3, 7-5 against Rebekah Masarov/Sarah Sorribes Tormo.

Poland is also part of the group.

The winners of the groups advance to the semifinals of the competition.

The final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup takes place from November 7 to 12 in Seville on closed hard.
